DAY OF THE YEAR ( 12 - SEPTEMBBER )

1. CHOCOLATE MILKSHAKE DAY

If you canā€™t suck your milkshake through a straw, itā€™s not a milkshake ā€“ itā€™s a glass of ice cream.  Bill Maher, The New New Rules

Rich, creamy, and indulgent, the milkshake is perhaps the perfect desert food. Cold enough to take the chill off a hot summerā€™s day, smooth enough to be enjoyed through a straw, and thick enough to provide a satisfying weight on the tongue. Make it with chocolate? Pure perfection. Chocolate Milkshake Day celebrates this indulgent dessert and itā€™s history, especially as it comes in combination with that richest and most desired of substances.
Dating from 1885, Chocolate Milk Shake Day celebrates a drink loved by old and young alike. Originally served in bars, a milkshake was an alcoholic concoction of whiskey, eggs, and cream. If the customer enjoyed the drink, he shook hands and tipped the barman.

By 1900, the whiskey was replaced with chocolate, vanilla or strawberry syrup. In 1922, a Wahlgreenā€™s employee added Horlickā€™s malted milk powder to the mixture and the first malted shake was born. When Steven Poplawski invented the electric blender in 1922, the texture of milkshakes changed from smooth, thick and creamy to the frothy airy consistency loved today.
Celebrate this special day by going out with friends and family for chocolate shakes at a traditional soda fountain or check out recipes and blend some different chocolate shakes at home. And donā€™t forget the whipped cream!

History of Chocolate Milkshake Day

In 1885 a wonderful thing happened, the term ā€œmilkshakeā€ was first recorded and introduced into the dessert world. The milkshakes of that time, however, were a much different animal than that which are commonly consumed today. At that time a milkshake referred to something far more akin to what we call ā€œEggnogā€ now, a mixture of eggs, whiskey, and a variety of spices and flavorings. It didnā€™t take long for that to change, as in the1900ā€™s it became a term for a much more wholesome beverage. The ice cream was still not officially part of the mix, though it was commonly ordered along with them.
It wasnā€™t until the invention of the electric mixer that the milkshake as we know it came to pass, and the history of the two are connected. As you can see the chocolate milkshake actually predates the milkshake as we know it today, but it truly reached perfection once ice cream became a natural part of the drink. What is often unknown is that milkshakes were not always called milkshakes, in the 1950ā€™s they were called frosted drinks, cabinets, velvets, or frappes.

3. QUIET DAY

Noise is everywhere, on the crowded train, in the busy office, in the pub, the school playground, and even at home. We simply canā€™t seem to get away from the buzz of everyday life. Sometimes itā€™s just all too much.

We know that peace and quiet are good for both the body and the mind, but itā€™s increasingly difficult in todayā€™s world to experience real quiet, and thatā€™s why a National Quiet Day is so important.

Everything thatā€™s created comes out of silence. Your thoughts emerge from the nothingness of silence. Your words come out of this voice. Your very essence emerged from emptiness. All creativity requires some stillness.

                           Wayne Dyer

Every day we are surrounded by the chatter of TV, the radio, even our friends and family. Few are the opportunities we have to engage in a little quiet contemplation, giving our vocal chords a rest to simply listen to the world around us and simply experience it. Quiet Day is dedicated to taking a little time to free your voice and mind from the rigors of conversation.
